'First Date' series, Work in Progress.
These are some images I made in preparation for a series of 4 paintings I want to do which all tell one story. Due to the size of this project I wanted to spend some time thumbnailing it, picking colour pallets which work together, refining the appearance of the characters as well as practicing the techniques I would use to paint them. This was a lot of fun to spend time on but it also meant that I don’t have a finished painting for you today like I said I would.
Once the first is finished it should be much quicker to complete the next three since all the planning will be done, but unfortunately the first one is still a few weeks away from being finished.
In the meantime I hope you enjoy this peak behind the curtain and if you have any questions please feel free to email me :)
A couple of sketch book pages from this week.
This is going to be my last weekly post. At least for the foreseeable future. Its become clear to me that my time for personal art each week is less than the time it takes me to develop, plan and draw a complete illustration. Because of that, in order to have some new stuff for these weekly posts, I spend most of my time focusing on sketches and studies.
I have really enjoyed making and posting this steady stream of new stuff but I think that you’ll get to see much more interesting work if I slow down my schedule to one post every 2-3 weeks. Ive got an exciting project in progress at the moment so don’t worry about me disappearing.
Thanks to everyone who’s been following my work on a week-to-week basis. I hope when you see my upcoming stuff that’s its worth the wait.
Some sketches from my life drawing class
Another oil painting hand study.
Planning to do a few more of these before working on a larger piece.
Will try to at least make the next few studies a bit more interesting than just hands.
Hand study - oils
This was the first time using oil paints since moving into the new house. My plan for the next few weeks is to focus on studies in to learn to control colour and paint more realistic flesh tones. I learnt a lot during this painting but I’m definitely going to need more practice before I complete grasp of the techniques.
Single Page Comic
This was a project that I had been itching to do for a while. I had been practicing many separate art ideas and wanted to pull them all together in one project. It took longer than I initially planned and was the first project I’ve done like this in while. I’m relatively pleased with the results and learnt a lot whilst making this.
I liked coming up with an idea and communicating a story; so I’m going to try and do more in the future. Although I may not do comic pages for some time, until Ive streamlined my process so it doesn’t take me as long.
Work in progress shot of a comic page I’m making.
Its interesting returning to sequential images after focusing on studies and single images for the past few months. It is very demanding as far as time is concerned which is why this is a WIP rather than a finished piece.
Not sure why I ended up writing this particular little sequence, guess I just wanted an excuse to look up cute reference photos of ducks.
Some sketches from the past few weeks of my life drawing classes with Tony Johansen.

A fanart piece I did for the manga series WaqWaq by Ryu Fujisaki.
Its a fun battle manga with really cool designs but also an oddly compelling bleak and dark undercurrent. It was an interesting challenge to try and communicate the designs into something more representational and less stylized. Also manga hair always looks kinda stupid when done realistically :P
It was recommended to me by my friend Maxy Barnard ( thedespondent ), who does a great podcast on manga series and their cultural impact. He even dedicated an episode to this series, http://friendshipeffortvictory.wordpress.com/2013/05/20/fev27/. Well worth a listen if you get the chance :)
Digital Painting of a friend I did to use for social media profile pictures. Included 3 different cropped images and greyscale options.
Perspective exercise I’ve been working on for the past few weeks. Made up a fictional kitchen based on some building company’s floor plans and a few friends and families’ houses with the goal of drawing it from 3 different angles. Reusing the location multiple times increased my focus on the measurements and distances which should be very useful when I return to choreographing comic scenes. Also multiple lighting scenarios for the same location was an interesting challenge.
Unfortunately moving house means I haven’t had much time to work on a finished piece, but rather than leave you with nothing this week I thought I would post some pages from my sketchbook. I have been working on improving expressions and likenesses, some of them are pretty weak but I’m starting to get some sense of what I’m doing.
